Inaugural Conference Held in Baltimore to Explore Pathways to Prevent Gun Violence on College Campuses Nationwide

(BALTIMORE – February 11, 2025)—Gun violence on U.S. college and university campuses has been a growing concern in recent years. Between 2013 and 2023, there were over 300 instances of gunfire on college campuses across 42 states and Washington, D.C., resulting in 94 fatalities and 215 injuries. Notably, since 1966, there have been 13 mass shootings at U.S. colleges where more than three people were killed, leading to at least 102 deaths. These incidents have significant implications for campus safety and student well-being, underscoring the need for effective policies and interventions to address this critical issue. Morgan State University’s Center for Urban Violence and Crime Reduction and the School of Social Work are hosting the Inaugural National Conference on Gun Violence on U.S. College and University Campuses to address this unfortunate trend. The conference will be held at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront from February 18-19.

This National Symposium for Gun Violence on U.S. College and University Campuses seeks to initiate a national discussion on the causes and correlates of the rise in gun violence on and around campuses. It will bring together college and university presidents, community leaders, researchers, policymakers, and subject matter experts to discuss solutions, develop more sensitive threat assessments, and explore preventative interventions to reduce gun violence in these settings.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Prevention Strategies: Explore cutting-edge approaches to identify and mitigate potential threats before they escalate.
  • Emergency Response: Learn best practices for rapid, effective responses to active shooter situations and other gun-related crises.
  • Policy Development: Engage in critical discussions on crafting comprehensive, effective policies that balance safety with academic freedom.
  • Mental Health Initiatives: Examine the role of mental health services in violence prevention and community healing.
  • Technology Solutions: Discover innovative technological tools designed to enhance campus safety and emergency communication.

“Gun violence has become an unfortunate and growing threat to the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff on college campuses across the nation,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “This inaugural conference provides an opportunity for higher education leaders, researchers, and policymakers to come together, share knowledge, and collaborate on solutions that will help us safeguard our institutions. Morgan State University is proud to lead this national dialogue.”
