(BALTIMORE – September 25, 2023) — As a result of the collaboration between the nation’s largest scholarship and success program for immigrant youth, TheDream.US, and Maryland’s largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU)—Morgan State University—more Dreamers can achieve their college and career goals. This fall semester, Morgan welcomed 10 new TheDream.US Scholars to campus, seven freshmen and three transfer students joined the five returning Scholars currently enrolled.

The new Dreamers starting their academic journeys at Morgan are part of the largest-ever cohort of TheDream.US Scholars—more than 1,800 new students from across the country attending more than 80 institutions nationwide.

“As we welcome our first cohort of Dreamers to Morgan’s campus, we are pleased with our collaboration with TheDream.US and the success we’re seeing thus far,” said Kara Turner, Ph.D., senior vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Success at Morgan. “Through this effort, there is a tremendous opportunity to further grow the diversity of our student population while expanding the educational opportunities for those students who desire to attend a rising research university steeped in the HBCU tradition. We look forward to welcoming more Dreamers to the National Treasure.”

Maryland is classified as a Comprehensive Access state due to its policies that provide statewide access to in-state tuition and some state financial aid or scholarships for the state’s resident DACA recipients and undocumented students. According to the Higher Ed Immigration Portal, first and second-generation immigrant students comprise 31% of all students enrolled in higher education in Maryland.

“We are proud to partner with Morgan and our other Partner Colleges to support talented Dreamers’ pursuit of higher education and career success,” said Gaby Pacheco, director of advocacy, communications, and development at TheDream.US. “Despite many obstacles that have been put in their way, our Scholars continue to persevere and succeed, demonstrating in the process why expanding opportunities for Dreamers is so important for the nation.”

The newest class of Scholars comes from 73 different countries of origin and has spent most of their lives in the United. Nearly three-fourths of this cohort are fully undocumented, lacking Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status due to ongoing legal challenges to the program that have barred new applicants from receiving DACA status and Temporary Protective Status (TPS). More than 80% of new Scholars are the first in their family to attend college.

As TheDream.US enters its tenth year, overall, the organization has provided more than 10,000 scholarships to Dreamers and counts more than 3,800 of its alumni as college graduates. The application period for the next available round of TheDream.US scholarships begins on November 1, 2023.
