(BALTIMORE – March 2, 2025) – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of legendary neo-soul singer and artist Angie Stone, who lost her life in a car accident on her way to perform at the tournament. Ms. Stone was scheduled to perform at the halftime show of the CIAA Men’s Championship Basketball Game at 4:00 PM. In honor of her legacy, CIAA Chaplain Pastor Jerome Barber led a moment of silence and prayer before a somber stadium filled with fans.
CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker released the following statement:
“We are heartbroken over the untimely loss of Angie Stone, an award-winning artist, a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and a dedicated community activist, role model, and mother. Her soulful voice and uplifting spirit left an unforgettable impact on her community, our nation, and the world. Through her immense talent and passion, she inspired and brought hope to many. On behalf of the entire CIAA family, we extend our deepest condolences and stand in support of all those mourning this tremendous loss.”
Virginia State Trojans Claim Men’s Championship Title
The 2025 Food Lion CIAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament concluded with the Virginia State Trojans securing a 71-64 victory over Bluefield State in the men’s championship game.
50th Anniversary of the CIAA Women’s Championship Tournament
The CIAA proudly celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament at the CFG Bank Arena. This historic milestone recognizes the outstanding athletes who have shaped women’s basketball and continues the legacy of excellence, perseverance, and empowerment.
Under the theme #PaintingHerStory, the weeklong tournament featured marquee events such as the EmpowerHER Town Hall, Women’s Empowerment Brunch (presented by Nationwide), Championship Saturday’s Ladies’ Night, The Mind, Body, Soul Panel, and the John B. McClendon Jr. CIAA Hall of Fame Breakfast.
“This year marks a monumental milestone for the CIAA and women’s sports as we honor the trailblazing athletes who have shaped its legacy,” said Commissioner McWilliams-Parker. “The Food Lion CIAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament is more than a competition—it is a celebration of the dedication of our member institutions, the resilience of our student-athletes, and the vibrant culture of our HBCU community. A Weeklong Celebration of HBCU Excellence
The CIAA Basketball Tournament serves as the HBCU precursor to March Madness, taking place annually during Black History Month in Baltimore, a city rich in Black culture. In 2024, the tournament generated an economic impact of $32.5 million, supporting over 1,300 jobs and generating $3.1 million in state and local taxes.
