(BALTIMORE – October 2, 2023) – Mike “Nyce” Middleton is the Operations Director and Host of “Hiphop Chronicles” at WEAA. Every Thursday, Mike Nyce affords me the opportunity to come on the airwaves and present the BMORENews Report. One day before the show, we came up with the idea to do a SPECIAL EDITION of the Joe Manns Black Wall Street Awards dedicated in part to WEAA icons who have been an essential part of the 46-year history of this beloved radio station.

The event was designed to pay homage to the Honorable Congressman Kweisi Mfume and a few others. Cong. Mfume was there in the very beginning and is a Founding Father.

Because of their efforts, WEAA has propelled many of the hosts who have come along later to higher heights. And for these gifts, we are thankful.

As a media specialist, it is so important that we have WEAA 88.9 FM, LIVE from the campus of Morgan State University. It affords Black journalists like myself the unique opportunity to share our voices and unapologetically so.

In a majority Black city like Baltimore, the Home of Segregation, WEAA represents so much to generations of Black people in Baltimore – and it showed last night as fans came out to show love to Sandi Mallory, “The Prime Minister” Neil Mattei, and Gospel Grace’s Ernestine Jones. Other honorees included Letisha Madry, Lakisha Greenwade, Robin Neverdon, and Vennieth McCormick.

Other guests tonight included former Mayor Catherine Pugh and fashion mogul Travis Winkey.

To say the least, the event was a warm homecoming in a sense. It was a beautiful ensemble of Baltimore’s everyday heroes and heroes who love their city and the people in it. And it shows through the work they do on a consistent basis. Whether it is selling real estate or running a tech company or managing treatment facilities, the evening’s honorees contribute more than we realize.

SALUTE!
