(BALTIMORE – July 20, 2023) – “Dear Black Girl: Letters to My Sisters” is an installation and performance piece affirming the gifts and experiences of Black and brown women. Inspired by the poem “A Black Girl’s Country” by poet, filmmaker, and dancer Nia June – I explore the idea of “Home”. The collaboration affords women the opportunity to share their journey through their own narratives. The collaboration of embroidered quotes images, African textiles, audio, video, and found objects are combined to explore Black and brown womanhood through poetry, music, fashion, and dance. This exhibition is intended to serve as a space for healing and allow Black and brown women to explore themselves while honoring their own processes in a safe space. In addition, the curated space of vibrant textiles allows the women the opportunity to pay homage to all of the women who have come before them. It allows diverse viewers the opportunity to become a witness in their journey of healing and celebration.
