(WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 28, 2025) – Today, U.S. Representative Kweisi Mfume led a letter alongside Representatives Sarah Elfreth and Johnny Olszewski formally requesting the Maryland Public Service Commission (“PSC”) to rescind the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (“BG&E”) utility rate increases that took effect this year and to stop any future increases for 2025. The federal lawmakers made the same request of BG&E and attached a copy of the letter they sent to the PSC.

“We are writing to communicate our extreme concern and disappointment as we continue to receive more and more testimonials from our constituents faced with skyrocketing BG&E costs after the 2025 utility rates increase granted by the Maryland Public Service Commission. In the simplest terms, many of our constituents cannot afford the rate hikes thrust upon them,” the lawmakers wrote. “We respectfully request that the Public Service Commission take the following actions: (i) Rescind the BG&E rate increases that went into effect this year; (ii) Halt any additional rate hikes scheduled for this year; and (iii) Provide us with your best thoughts on why our constituents should feel that these outsized rate increases are justified,” they concluded.

The lawmakers sent the letter in response to demands made by constituents who are trying to cope with escalating utility bills this year. The rate increases most impact seniors, lower-income Marylanders, and individuals living on a fixed income.
