Since 2011, BMORENews and its partners have recognized more than 2,900 leaders across 9 U.S. cities for their contributions to Black entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. This year, we’re excited to expand that legacy with the debut of the Black Wall Street Youth Awards — a new initiative designed to uplift and showcase the rising generation of Black changemakers, visionaries, and future business leaders.

Joseph Haskins, Jr.

Joseph Haskins, Jr. is the esteemed Co-founder and Chairman of The Harbor Bank of Maryland. His illustrious career began as a Management Trainee and Loan Officer at JP Morgan Chase in New York (formerly Chemical Bank) and Wachovia Bank (then Midlantic National Bank) in New Jersey. He also served as Vice President for Business and Finance at Coppin State University and managed investment portfolios at Wachovia Securities (formerly Prudential Securities) before joining The Harbor Bank of Maryland over 40 years ago.
Mr. Haskins has made significant contributions to Maryland’s development. He served on Maryland’s Cybersecurity Council and was the founding Chairman of East Baltimore Development, Inc. (EBDI), a transformative community development project encompassing over 88 acres of housing and a Science/Biotech Park. His leadership extends to various prestigious boards, including Baltimore Gas & Electric (an Exelon Company) and The Security Title Company. Additionally, he chaired the Commission of Business and Economic Development for the State of Maryland and served on the boards of CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Morgan State University Business School, and Associated Black Charities. His expertise has been sought on transition committees and commissions for six Maryland Governors, three Baltimore Mayors, and the Maryland Comptroller of the Treasury.
Mr. Haskins has been honored with numerous accolades, including Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Pride of Baltimore Person of the Year, and induction into the Baltimore Sun Civic Hall of Fame and The Daily Record’s Influential Marylanders. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Morgan State University, an M.B.A. in Finance from New York University (Stern), a Master of Liberal Arts in Economics from Johns Hopkins University, and a Banking Certificate from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
