(ANNAPOLIS, MD – January 24, 2025) — Today, Delegate Ashanti Martinez (D-New Carrollton) introduced a House Joint Resolution reaffirming Maryland’s unwavering commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as a cornerstone to access to the American Dream. Co-sponsored by 25 members of the Maryland House of Delegates, Delegates Acevero, Addison, Alston, Fair, Fennell, Guzzone, Hill, Kaiser, Kaufman, R. Lewis, McCaskill, Pasteur, Phillips, Roberts, Ruff, Ruth, Simpson, Solomon, Taveras, Taylor, Turner, Vogel, Wilkins, Woods, and Young—the resolution emphasizes the importance of DEI in promoting opportunity, prosperity, and shared success for all Marylanders.
“For generations, the American Dream has been a beacon of hope—a promise that through hard work and determination, anyone can achieve their version of success,” said Delegate Martinez. “This resolution underscores Maryland’s dedication to removing barriers, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.”
The resolution highlights DEI’s integral role in advancing civil rights and social justice throughout America’s history, referencing key milestones like the 19th Amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. It also recognizes the harm caused by recent efforts to undermine DEI, which threatens to stifle freedom of expression, diminish diversity, and hurt the economic and social fabric of the state and nation.
Delegate Martinez’s resolution encourages policymakers, educational institutions, businesses, and community organizations to adopt and uphold DEI principles, fostering environments that promote respect, belonging, and equitable opportunities for all.
“We must reject attempts to attack DEI and instead champion policies that expand access to the American Dream for every community,” Delegate Martinez added. “This is not just a moral imperative—it’s essential to the health of our economy and communities. You shouldn’t have to be a Billionaire to achieve your dreams in this country.”
The resolution will be sent to key federal and state leaders, including President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore. Sen. Joanne C. Benson is the Senate Cross-file.
