BLACK WALL STREET HONORS STOKEY CANNADY: FROM RESERVOIR HILL TO REDEMPTION
Carlmichael "Stokey" Cannady to be recognized with a Joe Manns Black Wall Street Award, Feb. 5th

(BALTIMORE – February 1, 2026) – You want to talk about Black History? Let’s talk about redemption. Let’s talk about resilience. Let’s talk about a man who turned his pain into purpose and his past into power.

Carlmichael “Stokey” Cannady lives his life by a simple quote once stated by Winston Churchill: “Never, never, never give up.” Seen as not just a philosophy for his life but a motivating drive for success, Carmichael Cannady, or “Stokey,” is a man who has beaten the odds and stereotypes of society to show himself to be dauntless, resilient, and victorious in overcoming defeat.

But, compared to where he was at the beginning, his situation today shows just how far he has come. Although “Stokey” was born and raised in the Baltimore City communities of Whitelock and Reservoir Hill, life for him has not always been what it is today. Carmichael has not always been the beacon of light and voice of the community he is known for presently.

As a youth, he faced the harsh realities of inner-city life that could only be imagined. Raised in a fatherless home by his single mother, who did the best she could, it was not long before she fell prey to a drug addiction. Soon after, “Stokey” himself became entangled in the life of the streets of Baltimore City, which sadly led to a path of crime, drugs, and ultimately incarceration.

Yet little did he know that this setback was a setup for him to become the charismatic, devoted humanitarian he is today.

Today, Carmichael “Stokey” Cannady declares, “I am changed!” He lives each day with a new determination to give back to the very city he formerly let down. It has become his mission and life’s work to revitalize Baltimore while serving as a leader and mentor to inner-city youth, in an effort to prevent them from making the same mistakes he made.

“Stokey” has become a passionate advocate for revitalizing Baltimore City to better equip its youth, citizens, and neighborhoods for a better tomorrow. His efforts don’t go unnoticed as he dedicates his life to advocacy. He has spearheaded efforts every year to ensure that youth have adequate school supplies, made accommodations to provide shelter and meals for the city’s homeless population, sponsored toy drives for less fortunate children, and even assisted financially struggling seniors in obtaining much-needed medication they otherwise could not afford.

He played a vital role in the 2015 Baltimore Uprising by organizing peace rallies that brought calm amid a sweltering storm. He is a well-sought-after anti-violence activist, published author, entertainment executive, philanthropist, and devoted father. “Stokey” currently serves as president and CEO of The Stokey Project, Marketing Manager for Shoe City, and is in partnership with Hip Hop legend Jay-Z and Rocnation.

He exemplifies and upholds the qualities of a leader for the people. He is, some say, one who hears the cries of the voiceless and has taken that platform to heart. With the support of family, friends, and members of the Baltimore City community, “Stokey” officially joined the 2020 mayoral race. He also had a street named after him—”Stokey’s Way”—in recognition of his community accomplishments.

This Thursday, February 5th, we’re honoring Stokey Cannady with the Joe Manns Black Wall Street Award at the pilot episode of The Doni Glover Show LIVE.
