’73 Poets National Champs to Receive Top Honors at BMORENews 23rd Anniversary
"Kosher" (aka Dwayne Wood) and Skip Wise. Skip Wise and Adrian Dantley are linked by the famous 1973 high school basketball game where Wise's Dunbar team defeated DeMatha, led by Dantley. In that game, Wise reportedly scored 47 points, and years later, a retired Dantley acknowledged Wise as the toughest player he ever faced.

(BALTIMORE — November 22, 2025)
— Mark your calendars: BMORENews.com’s 23rd Anniversary Benefit takes place Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum in Baltimore. RSVP at bmorenews23.eventbrite.com.

A cornerstone of Baltimore’s Black business and media landscape, the annual celebration centers on the Joe Manns Black Wall Street Awards, honoring leaders whose service and innovation strengthen their industries and communities. Since 2011, BMORENews and its partners have recognized more than 3,000 honorees across nine U.S. cities for advancing Black entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

This year debuts the Black Wall Street Youth Awards, spotlighting the next generation of changemakers, visionaries, and emerging business leaders driving the future of Black enterprise.

Honoring the ’73 Poets and One Baltimore

’73 National Championship Poets and Coach Bob Wade.

The legendary 1973 Dunbar Poets National Championship Team will receive top honors. The championship roster includes Timmy Greene, Skip Wise, Duke Richardson, Alonzo Buckson, Gilbert Richards, Donald Williams, Donnie Joy, and Billy Snowden.

Jimmy Conyers of City College, a co-founder of One Baltimore, will also be recognized.

“Basketball runs through Baltimore’s veins,” said Doni Glover, Publisher of BMORENews.com and proud Dunbar alumnus. “Dunbar Poet basketball is foundational to that legacy. From East Baltimore to the world stage, no group of men has delivered greater collective impact—not just in the game, but in how they’ve shaped lives beyond the court.”

Also being recognized is One Baltimore, a 501(c)(3) founded by two Poets—Donnie Joy and Timmy Greene—alongside City College Knight Jimmy Conyers. The organization celebrated its 20th anniversary this summer at Woodlawn Park. For Baltimore basketball faithful, no gathering rivals the One Baltimore cookout—a legendary reunion where icons from across generations gather, trade war stories, and build new traditions.
