(BALTIMORE – September 14, 2024) – Born Howard Beverly on December 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, Frankie Beverly was a jewel to many in Black America. I grew up on his songs. I know the words in his music as well as anybody else, and he will always have a place in my heart.

The great performer got his wings this week and will surely be missed. His “LIVE in New Orleans” album is probably my all-time favorite. It’s interesting how his music could set any cookout on fire. Most everybody would “feel the feelin.’”

“There ain’t no way that I can let you go before I know just what to do …” – ahhhh! There will never be another like him. Nobody could croon like him and touch the depths of our souls. With that magical smile, his music lifted me up a many a day!

Discovered by Marvin Gaye, Frankie’s Raw Soul changed their name to Frankie Beverly and Maze, and the rest is history. I saw him at Pier 6 in Baltimore and will never forget that evening. The thing is – he sounded the same in person as he did on his recordings. And that is rare, especially these days.

So many hits: “Southern Girl”, “Too Many Games”, “We Are One”, “Thank You” …. and don’t forget “Happy Feelings”! I could go on and on. I’m sure these few words don’t even scratch the surface of the legendary R&B singer, but I had to put something down on paper because music means that much to me. And don’t forget his signature cap!

Rest well, legend! You have entertained our hearts and souls for decades. I thoroughly enjoyed and still enjoy your music.

Frankie! TGR: Thank you
