Who is Jasmine?

Jasmine Young is the Director of The Warner Music/ Blavatnik Center for Music Business at Howard University. She was appointed in the Spring of 2022. The Center is an Academic Hub to prepare Bison for careers in the Music Industry. The Warner Music/ Blavatnik Center is ranked as one of the Best Music Business Schools in The WORLD. Young is a passionate educator and a humble community servant who was recently nominated as Educator of the Year by the IEBA.

A highly educated marketing and entertainment executive and Educator, Young has been extremely effective in the development and management of strategic marketing strategies. Working in the entertainment, publishing, and retail industries, Ms. Young has consistently developed creative approaches to increase revenue and visibility for brands. A communications specialist and avid public speaker, she
has demonstrated her gift to create and execute the “Selling” message to the masses.

Young is skilled at reaching the people and developing opportunities in the most obscure places, as cost-effectively as possible. Young’s experience in multiple industries proves to be an asset that she utilizes to help grow brands from a creative standpoint. Immediately after receiving her undergraduate degree from Howard University, Young was immediately hired as a full-time “staffer” at the then “bubbling” Def Jam Records label. Starting as coordinator, she rose to the status of Sr. Director of Marketing, where she oversaw the day-to-day activities of such household acts as Jay Z, DMX, Slick Rick, Memphis Bleek, Case, Onyx, Erick Sermon, Foxy Brown, and EPMD. Young has also had her hands in Def Jam’s joint venture projects, including Outburst (Domino), Rocafella Records, and Ruff Ryder Records. Marketing these multi-platinum acts/labels to the public gave her first-hand knowledge of selling to a diversified market. Knowing how to reach anywhere from two to ten million customers on any given day proves to be an unbelievably valuable tool.

During the Winter of 2002, Young was asked by Lyor Cohen, then Chairman of the Island/ Def Jam Music Corporation/ Universal Music (Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi, Rocafella Records, etc.) and Earl “DMX” Simmons (21 million Records sold Worldwide) to head a joint venture that was awarded to DMX the previous year. She is responsible for the company’s resurgence into mainstream music. Her tenure at Bloodline Records resulted in a gold (500,000+) selling soundtrack to accompany Jet Li and DMX (Joel Silver-The Matrix 1&2, Romeo Must Die, etc.) Major Motion Picture. While at Bloodline Records, Young was also responsible for coordinating the “Bloodline/ Ecko Clothing” advertising venture.

After an exceptionally long and successful tenure working for a label, Young decided it was best to venture forth to new territories. She has served as a marketing consultant for the Ascena Corporation, (the parent company of Dressbarn and Justice). She was also the VP of Marketing/ Operations for The North Star Group which is the publishing home of The Source Enterprises and Jones Magazine.

Ms. Young was awarded a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) from Felician University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Howard University. She was the Administrative Professor at Monroe College School of Business & Accounting in The Bronx, NY. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Metropolitan College in NYC where she teaches New Media in the MBA Department. Young has previously taught at IAR (The Institute of Audio Research) where she lectured in Marketing and Public Relations. She has also previously taught at City College’s Continuing Education Program. Young has recently received an Official Congressional Citation, awarded by Congresswoman Yvette Harris (Representative (D-NY 9th District since 2013) highlighting extensive community work, outreach, and affiliations (December 2019). Jasmine Young is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
