(BALTIMORE – October 3, 2023) – I must admit that my own sentiments are far from positive. It is with a heavy heart and a sense of profound disappointment that I address you today. I write not only as a concerned citizen but also as a representative of countless others who share my sentiments.
The recent confirmation of Commissioner Richard Worley has left a bitter taste in our mouths, as it seems that our voices, pleas, and concerns were disregarded in favor of politics as usual. We implored you not to confirm Commissioner Worley, providing detailed testimony outlining the reasons why we believed he was not the right candidate for the role of top cop in Baltimore City.
In the face of this overwhelming opposition, it is disheartening to see that you chose to ignore our collective voice and proceeded with the confirmation regardless. It is a disservice to the people you represent, and it showcases a grave negligence and lack of respect for our concerns.
However, it is important to acknowledge the unwavering stance taken by Councilwoman Phylicia Porter, who exemplified what a true public servant should be. Her decision to vote against Commissioner Worley’s confirmation demonstrated a commitment to standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. Councilwoman Porter’s actions serve as a shining example of the type of leadership and integrity that should be emulated by all elected officials.
I implore you, esteemed members of the City Council, to reflect upon the gravity of this decision and its implications for the people you have been elected to serve. By disregarding our concerns and failing to exercise due diligence, you have committed a form of political homicide, leaving us feeling neglected and disrespected.
We, the constituents, place our trust in you to act in our best interests, to listen to our voices, and to make decisions that will positively impact our lives and our community. It is disheartening to witness that trust is eroded by actions that prioritize politics over the well-being of those you serve.
I urge you to reconsider your approach, to listen to the concerns of your constituents, and to take meaningful action to rectify this situation. The people of Baltimore City deserve elected officials who prioritize accountability, transparency, and the collective welfare over political expediency.
In no way take this letter as a form of an attack, but let this letter serve as a plea for change, a call for accountability, and a reminder of the immense responsibility you carry as our elected representatives. HEAVY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN. Please heed our voices, for it is only through genuine collaboration and respect that we can build a better future for Baltimore City.
