(ATLANTA – February 14, 2023) – Morehouse College was founded as Augusta Institute on February 14, 1867, at Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, GA by the Rev. William Jefferson White, with the Rev. Richard C. Coulter and the Rev. Edmund Turney. Since that time, Morehouse has become an iconic institution in higher learning, recognized globally for its impact in producing leaders who create systemic societal change.

2023 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

A robust week of activities blends the past, present, and future with events designed to engage students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters. Events include the annual Founder’s Day Convocation, cake-cutting, Reflections of Excellence, and the A Candle in the Dark Gala.

MOREHOUSE HISTORY

  • February 14, 1867: Augusta Institute is founded at Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., by the Rev. William Jefferson White, with the Rev. Richard C. Coulter and the Rev. Edmund Turney.
  • 1879: Institute moves to Atlanta’s Friendship Baptist Church. Becomes Atlanta Baptist Seminary.
  • 1897: School changes its name to Atlanta Baptist College.
  • 1913: Atlanta Baptist College changes name to Morehouse College to honor Henry Lyman Morehouse, corresponding secretary of American Baptist Home Mission.
  • 1957: Morehouse College receives full accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
