(NEW YORK – April 6, 2026) – There are people who study injustice from a distance. And then there are people who lived it — who carry it in their bones — and chose to turn that experience into a weapon for change. John Royster is the latter.
A justice-impacted individual, John Royster knows firsthand what it means to be swallowed by a system that was never designed to rehabilitate — only to contain. But where others might have been broken by that reality, John emerged with clarity, conviction, and an unshakable mission: the eradication of mass incarceration of people of color in America.
His credentials match his calling. As an MPA TOW Fellow of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Institute, John has married lived experience with academic rigor — a combination that makes him not just a voice, but a force.
And he doesn’t mince words about the root cause.
“Discriminatory mass incarceration of people of color in the U.S. stems from systemic racism embedded in policing, sentencing laws, judicial bias, and the profit-driven prison-industrial complex.”
That’s not a talking point. That’s a diagnosis — delivered by someone who has seen the machine up close and dedicated his life to dismantling it, one community at a time.
John Royster represents what redemption looks like when it refuses to be quiet. He is proof that the system does not get the final word. The community does.
On Tuesday, April 14, the Joe Manns Black Wall Street Awards is proud to honor John Royster at Black Wall Street CHELSEA — standing alongside fellow honorees Ambre Anderson, Nathaniel B. Evans, Edward Harrison, and Gina C. Williams in a celebration of Black excellence, resilience, and unyielding community power.
