BPALiveWire recognizes the robust bench in the conservative movement.
(WASHINGTON, DC – December 9, 2024) – In a recent Politico article, an unnamed source expressed skepticism about the pool of Black Republicans available for potential appointments in a future Trump administration, claiming, “There’s no bench.” This statement not only reflects a lack of awareness but also perpetuates a misconception about the depth and breadth of Black voices within the conservative movement.
Contrary to such uninformed opinions, the conservative movement boasts a robust and dynamic array of Black leaders, thinkers, and practitioners who contribute significantly across policy, business, and grassroots activism. These individuals defy monolithic stereotypes, embodying diverse perspectives and priorities within conservatism. Like the current slate of ideologically robust nominees in the Trump cabinet, the bench of Black conservatives ranges from hardcore MAGA loyalists to Trump policy-supporting libertarians and card-carrying Republicans. Recognizing and celebrating these voices is essential to dispelling the narrative of scarcity.
BPALiveWire is proud to announce the launch of a long-planned series, Voices in the Public Square, aimed at spotlighting the achievements and insights of Black conservatives and libertarians. Leading the series is a profile of David J. Byrd, whose exemplary career is a testament to this ” bench’s strength and versatility.”
David J. Byrd: A Legacy of Leadership and Service
David J. Byrd’s career illustrates the depth of experience and commitment found among Black conservatives. From public service to private-sector leadership, Byrd has carved out a legacy of economic development, innovative problem-solving, and unwavering dedication to empowering communities.
Public Service: A Tradition of Excellence Byrd’s career in public service spans federal, state, and local governments. As the 18th National Director of the Minority Business Development Agency, he championed initiatives to empower minority-owned businesses, drawing on his extensive experience across several federal departments, including Housing and Urban Development, Education, and Health and Human Services.
In New Jersey, Byrd made history as Director of the Office of Small Business by surpassing $1 billion in state contracts awarded to small businesses. His leadership extended globally, securing over $400 million in contracts for New Jersey businesses during trade missions to South Africa, Namibia, and Ethiopia.
At the county level, Byrd was instrumental in managing over $2.6 billion in economic development projects in Prince George’s County, Maryland. From the $1.1 billion National Harbor project to the Woodmore Town Center, Byrd’s work has left a tangible, transformative impact on local communities.
Entrepreneurship and Mentorship Outside of government, Byrd has leveraged his expertise as an entrepreneur and life skills coach. Through his consulting firm, Byrd’s Eye, LLC, he has mentored incarcerated youth and homeless families, embodying his belief in personal empowerment as a cornerstone of community development.
A Family Tradition of Service Byrd’s dedication to public service is deeply rooted in his family history. From relatives who served as pioneers in law enforcement and politics to his wife, a retired Air Force Major, Byrd’s family exemplifies a commitment to leadership and service that spans generations.
A Thoughtful Visionary With a Master’s in Corporate Public Relations and a career marked by innovation and impact, Byrd brings both intellectual rigor and practical insight to every role he assumes. His contributions underscore the potential of Black conservatives to lead at every level of society.
The anonymous critique in Politico misses the mark: there is a vibrant bench of Black conservatives ready to lead and serve. As the Voices in the Public Square series will show, individuals like David J. Byrd prove that the bench is not only deep but also impactful, embodying the ideals of opportunity, resilience, and innovation that define the American spirit.
