The Big Budget Bill – Why I Voted NO
Congressman Kweisi Mfume

Dear Constituent,

Today, I voted a STRONG NO on the budget bill brought before the U.S. House of Representatives—as I promised you I would.

My vote:

  • Protects an estimated 2.6 million Marylanders who rely on Medicare and Medicaid from the largest Medicaid cut in history (slashing about $1 trillion from Medicaid, according to Forbes);
  • Prevents an estimated 1 in 4 nursing homes from closing (Source: House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee);
  • Wards off the largest cut to nutritional assistance ever for 684,000 Marylanders, including over 270,000 children, and (figures attributed to the Maryland Department of Human Services);
  • Protects nearly 840,000 at risk jobs in the next 5 years, and an additional 790,000 jobs in the next 10 years (Source: House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee).

This is just a snapshot of some of the provisions in this legislation.

Yesterday, House Democrats stood on the steps of the United States Capitol united in opposition to this bill.

We needed just four Republicans to vote against this bill in order to stop it in its tracks.

House Democrats also proposed over 500 amendments to alter the bill.

As a part of that, I submitted amendments of my own that would have prohibited the use of funds to DOGE—and that would have protected Federal Pell Grant funding for students enrolled in college.

And yet, every Democratic amendment was struck down from being included in the final bill text.

Rest assured, I will always let the best interests of Maryland’s 7th Congressional District serve as my conscience when a vote comes before me—I stand with you, always.

Sincerely,
