(BALTIMORE – April 2, 2025) – There is a place on Historic Pennsylvania Avenue that is so very special. It is called Upton Boxing Center. Coach Calvin and Coach Kenny have led a tremendous effort for several years now. People like Cleve Brister gave them such an opportunity. Coach Calvin said they came in, painted the spot, and began what would become the home of a world champion boxer: Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
It is particularly special that these men have never disconnected themselves after stardom. We can see them all on television, yet they are right around the corner from my house, working with the next generation. Please don’t take my word for it. Go to 1901 Pennsylvania Avenue and see for yourself!
The imagery is beautiful and yet incredibly powerful, given the challenges of life in West Baltimore. We hear so much about the negative, but I am telling you that deep in the heart of the community, there is an earth-shaking love that causes tremendous growth and development for young girls and boys.
Upton Boxing has pros, but it is also the training ground for many young people. Right there on the Avenue, where it’s not always polite, a beautiful rose stands strong in the midst of a concrete jungle.
You should see the discipline our youth are gaining. It is often a family affair, like Coach Kenny’s daughter, “Killer Bee.” She reminds us that we can do anything we put our minds to.

I just had to take a moment and let our community know that Upton Boxing is the goods!
