Reflections on Katrina, COVID, and Community: We Must Never Forget the People
(BALTIMORE – August 29, 2025) – I just finished watching the recent Hurricane Katrina documentary on Netflix, and it truly gutted me. At the time of Katrina, In 2005, I was 14 and I didn’t fully grasp connection between disaster, tragedy, and systemic racial injustice. Watching now, has hit me in a way I wasn’t ready for. The aftermath was worse than I remembered: families displaced, residents criminalized instead of cared for, and recovery that too often felt like punishment. One line stuck with me: “My mother said gentrification was on the way when she saw the bike lanes.” By…
By Terrence Thrweatt (BALTIMORE – December 3, 2022) – In 2015, I was a bright-eyed graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. I was younger and full of life. I had hope. I interned on Capitol Hill for Congressmen Elijah Cummings and Hakeem Jeffries (NY). When I got back to Baltimore City, I was determined to make a change. I joined the campaign of Yitzy Schleifer running against 40-year incumbent Councilwoman Rikki Spector. I put up campaign signs in West Arlington, Glen, and Grove Park. I vouched for him with the folks that did not think he’d represent “Lower Park…
Judge Vickie Gipson garnered 103k votes, more than any Black candidate in Anne Arundel (ANNAPOLIS – November 26, 2022) – Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Some of the political pundits predicted a “red wave” and others had hoped for a “blue wave”, what came instead was a “black wave” that changed the political complexion of Anne Arundel County politics. Here is one for the history books. For the first time in Anne Arundel County history, voters ushered into office a new sheriff, register of wills, a judge on the Orphan’s Court, and a new member of the Maryland General Assembly. What…
(BALTIMORE – November 14, 2022) – I am so grateful to be one of the first elected members to the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners! I am proud that my neighbors across Baltimore chose me as their advocate on the school board. As a mom of a future Baltimore City Public School Student, I am going to work hard for our families. Over a year ago, I applied for a vacancy on the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners. I applied because I did not hear board members raising issues I deeply understand. I was not selected to interview…
(HARLEM – November 10, 2022) – The Joe Manns Black Wall Street Awards (11.4) is the brainchild of Donald Morton “Doni” Glover. I’m so honored to be partnering with such an amazing person that always makes room for me at any table. When Doni asked me if I have names of people doing work in the community and making an impact – of course, many names came to mind. Having a background in community revitalization and impact, I realize that there are countless individuals doing this work. Congratulations to the awardees who have been influential in the work that they do.…
(FT. WASHINGTON – November 8, 2022) – As many of you know, I have been teaching since 2001 (with a couple of years off to try being a housewife which was not a good situation, but I’ll save that for another time). I LOVE being a teacher when all of the extra “mess” doesn’t steal our joy. I think back to going to work, while my ex-husband (business owner) had a flexible schedule. He could take our son to school, be there with 1 call if he forgot his lunch, and all of the benefits of not clocking in or…
(CLINTON, MD – November 7, 2022) – In the vastness of the Mount Ennon Baptist Church, Maryland Gubernatorial Candidate Wes Moore belted out the lyrics of “All Together Worthy.” He didn’t need a hymnal because he knew the words. This was communion Sunday. Some parishioners make sure they bring their children to replenish in the teachings of Jesus Christ. “As supper ended, he handed the cup (filled with wine) to his disciples, and said, ‘this is my blood which is given up for you … he then took the bread and said, ‘take this all you (a piece of bread).…
(ROCHESTER, NY – November 2, 2022) – I can’t say when I first realized I was related to Frederick Douglass. There was never a time that I can recall when my parents or grandparents sat me down and said we have something important to tell you about your ancestry. I’ve just always known. I remember being about five or six when I started to notice my ancestor’s likeness on statues and patina-stained busts. His face was emblazoned on money and postage stamps. There were schools, bridges, and buildings named for him. I would ask my friends and classmates if their…
(BALTIMORE – October 17, 2022) – A faithful follower sent this photo to highlight the fact that African Liberation colors are being implored by some diabolical forces working against our community’s self-interest. If the intentions behind this were good, BmoreNews.com would support it. However, the dark forces behind this have zero love for the Black community. Even worse, they do not respect us. If they did, they would not use these liberation colors. They would use something like the Confederate Flag; that’s more like them. Dear Black People, do not be fooled! Vote “NO” to Question K – as directed…
(BALTIMORE – October 7, 2022) – We recently hosted community stakeholders on a tour of the current conditions at Troy Brailey Easterwood Park. Since 2012, Omega Baltimore Foundation has managed and operated Easterwood Recreation Center in a public-private partnership with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP). The purpose of the tour was to expose the public to the critical capital improvements needed to improve the current infrastructure safety of the park. In attendance were Coppin Heights/AshCo East Community Association President, Shelia Davis; Muslim Community leader and President of Keys Empower, Mujahid Muhammed; Mothers on the Move President and community resident…
(UPPER MARLBORO – September 12, 2022) – This past weekend, there was a fair for Prince Georgians at the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro. The cool weather and open spacing were perfect fair weather that drew Prince Georgians young and old, some for the first time and some for the 30th in a row. Each parking lot was packed upon arrival. So much so, that many attendees parked in an overflow lot for County vehicles and walked for several minutes to get inside. We were greeted by lines at the coupon machines at the entrance for those who wanted to…
