(TULSA – February 4, 2025)—On the heels of the U.S. Department of Justice report documenting the extraordinary horrors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols has signaled his support for Project Greenwood, the most comprehensive plan yet to help repair the harm caused by the state-sanctioned destruction of the historic Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street.  Championed by Justice for Greenwood and the two last living massacre survivors, the plan has been embraced by massacre descendants, public officials, faith leaders, and business owners as an opportunity to create a stronger, more unified Tulsa for all.

WHAT: Press conference announcing Project Greenwood, a plan with historic support from Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols, the last living massacre survivors, and the descendant community

  • National civil rights attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons, lead attorney for the Tulsa Race Massacre survivors, founder and executive director of Justice for Greenwood

  • Lessie Benningfield Randle and Viola Fletcher, the two last known Tulsa Race Massacre survivors, and the family of the survivors

  • Tiffany Crutcher, massacre descendant and founder and executive director of the Terence Crutcher Foundation

  • Tyrance Billingsley, massacre descendant, technologist, and community leader

  • Rev. Dr. Rodney A. Goss, senior pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church

  • Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, senior minister of All Souls Church in Tulsa

  • Jaqueline Weary, a descendant of massacre survivor John Emerson, Sr.
