(BALTIMORE – April 26, 2026) — A new cultural platform dedicated to elevating women’s voices in cinema is set to debut in the Baltimore region this week, as Pikes Studio Cinema launches its highly anticipated Women in Film Series with a powerful opening night event in Pikesville.
The inaugural program, scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., will take place at Pikes Studio Cinema, located at 921 Reisterstown Road, bringing together filmmakers, creatives, and community members for an evening rooted in storytelling, culture, and recognition.
At the center of the evening is Baltimore filmmaker Shelia Hall, whose short animated film will be screened as a featured presentation. Known for her creative storytelling and unique visual style, Hall’s work reflects the spirit of the series — uplifting independent voices and culturally significant narratives.
Adding star power and industry depth to the evening, Grammy-nominated producer and entertainer Lucien “Bowlegged Lou” George Jr. will introduce the program. George, widely recognized as a member of the legendary R&B group Full Force and for his work on the House Party film franchise, will also be honored during the event.
He will receive the Paul Robeson Award, named in honor of Paul Robeson, recognizing his enduring contributions to music, film, and Black culture.
The evening will culminate with a screening of the groundbreaking 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Julie Dash. The film, widely regarded as a landmark in African American cinema, was the first feature directed by a Black woman to receive wide theatrical release in the United States and continues to influence generations of storytellers.
Organizers say the Women in Film Series is just the beginning.
“This is about creating space,” one organizer noted. “A space where women — especially Black women — can tell their stories, be seen, and be celebrated.”
With its focus on independent filmmaking and culturally resonant works, Pikes Studio Cinema aims to become a hub for community-driven programming and artistic expression in the Baltimore area.
