(TURNER STATION, MD – May 3, 2026) – A towering figure in Maryland politics and a lifelong advocate for justice, Kweisi Mfume will be honored at the upcoming Black Wall Street SPARROWS POINT event for his decades of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the people.

A proud son of Turner Station, Mfume’s journey is deeply rooted in one of Baltimore County’s most historic Black communities. Born in Baltimore and raised in West Baltimore, his life story reflects resilience, intellect, and purpose—qualities that have defined his path from local activism to national leadership.

A graduate of Morgan State University, where he would later serve as a professor and administrator, Mfume helped shape Baltimore’s media landscape as a co-founder of WEAA 88.9 FM, the university’s radio station. His early commitment to communication, information, and community voice would become a hallmark of his career.

He first served on the Baltimore City Council before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 7th Congressional District for six terms. During his tenure, he earned a reputation as a principled legislator and a powerful advocate for urban communities, economic development, and civil rights.

His commitment to justice extended beyond the halls of government. Mfume was among those arrested while protesting apartheid in South Africa—an act that underscored his willingness to stand on principle, even at personal cost. It remains one of the defining moments of a career shaped by courage and conviction.

Following his time in Congress, Mfume served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the NAACP, one of the nation’s oldest and most respected civil rights organizations. Under his leadership, the organization strengthened its national voice and continued its fight for equality and justice.

Today, having returned to Congress, Mfume continues to serve with the same focus and determination that have defined his career. Whether advocating for economic opportunity, educational equity, or the preservation of civil rights, his voice remains both steady and impactful.

For many in Baltimore and beyond, Kweisi Mfume is more than an elected official—he is a mentor, a statesman, and a symbol of enduring leadership.

At Black Wall Street SPARROWS POINT, we proudly recognize a son of Turner Station whose life’s work reflects the very essence of service, courage, and community.
