(BALTIMORE – May 29, 2026) – I heard a preacher say once that you know you have the Holy Spirit when you help empower others. Last night, thanks to Jody Davis, I had the distinct opportunity to thank a woman who opened doors not only for herself, but for many of us. Indeed, she has the Holy Spirit.

We all know the story of how she slept in her radio station in the early days. Konan of Radio One has shared many stories with me about what a remarkable person she is. Admittedly, when the time came for me to choose between Radio One and BMORENews.com after 21 years, I wasn’t totally happy. After all, I had the longest-running customized radio show at Radio One in the country.

But soon I came to realize it was the absolute best thing that could have happened.

I had done my tour there.

Had I stayed, I likely would have never built BlackUSA.News in 2020. We started with shows from hosts around the country, including Oakland, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Washington, D.C. Today, BlackUSA.News has evolved into a much more meaningful contribution to the Black Press. At a time when Black legacy newspapers are disappearing at an alarming rate, the goal of this portal is to encourage collaboration among some of the nation’s finest journalism talents. The mission remains the same as BMORENews.com: to give voice to our people so that we can tell our own story.

Nonetheless, that Tuesday morning 10 a.m. show put me out there and eventually led me to WBAL TV-11, where I served as a political analyst from 2000 to 2010. On the radio, I had the opportunity to interview everyone from BernNadette Stanis — the iconic Thelma from Good Times — to Ja’Net DuBois, from R&B crooner Tony Terry to politicians and everyday people like Leamon Best, all on WOLB 1010 AM, where information is power.

And I had the privilege of working alongside some of the greats in the industry: Randy Dennis, Tim Watts, Reggie Reg, my childhood schoolmate, Squirrel Wyde, JJ, Jason Rodriguez, Coach Butch McAdams, Joe Madison, and Lee Cross. As for The Big Phat Morning Show, Marc and I still work together at G. Grant Griffin Media today.

I won’t pretend I’m where Cathy Hughes is. She is an icon — full stop. But I am working toward it. Every day. And moments like last night remind me why.

To say the least, it was a joy to celebrate a woman who paved the way in media and yet still takes the time to honor Jody Davis on her 15th anniversary. That says something.

That’s special.

That’s real.
