ACTING PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY EXECUTIVE TARA H. JACKSON APPOINTS ACTING CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
Barry L. Stanton
(LARGO, MD – December 17, 2024) – Acting County Executive Tara H. Jackson announced today that she appointed Mr. Barry L. Stanton as the County’s Acting Chief Administrative Officer (ACAO). Mr. Stanton has served in the Office of the County Executive for two administrations, including in his current role as Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (DCAO) for Public Safety and Homeland Security. He begins his role as ACAO effective immediately.
“We are excited to appoint Mr. Stanton to the role of Acting Deputy Chief Administrative Officer,” said Acting County Executive Jackson. “With more than 40 years of experience, Mr. Stanton brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this role. The County will continue to benefit from his leadership in his new role as we continue to improve the quality of life of all Prince Georgians and ensure our County remains a great place of opportunity and growth for all.”
A proud Prince Georgian for over 25 years, Mr. Stanton has worked in public safety management and organizational development for over 45 years. He began his career with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau, where he rose from Correction Officer and Shift Commander to Coordinator of Training and Compliance/Accreditation and Director of Security. In 1991, Mr. Stanton was appointed the Corrections Bureau Chief and served in that capacity until 1997.
Mr. Stanton first joined Prince George’s County Government as the Director of the Department of Corrections in 1997, where he was responsible for overseeing a $65 million budget, managing a $30 million capital construction program, and leading strategic and organizational planning. Following his 10-year tenure with the Department of Corrections, Mr. Stanton went on to serve as Assistant County Manager for Frederick County for 3 years, and in 2010, he was appointed County Manager, becoming the first African American to hold that position. In this role, Mr. Stanton oversaw all Frederick County Government agency operations, created Frederick County’s first Office of Sustainability, and directed creating and implementing the County’s first strategic plan while simultaneously serving as Acting Director of the Division of Fire & Rescue.
“It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as Acting Chief Administrative Officer,” said ACAO Stanton. “As I step into this important role, I am committed to serving the residents of this County by fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and innovation across our County Government. We will continue to ensure that we as a government can thrive, adapt, and meet the needs of those we serve. As ACAO, I look forward to serving with integrity, determination, and a shared vision for a brighter Prince George’s.”
Before returning to Prince George’s County Government in 2021, Mr. Stanton also served as the Chief Operating Officer for Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) for 3 years. During his tenure with PGCPS, Mr. Stanton oversaw food services, security, transportation, building maintenance, custodial services, school boundaries, purchasing, and capital programs.
Mr. Stanton holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Cheyney State University in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in Columbia, Maryland.
