Games for boys, girls, and Baltimore’s basketball legends made the historic East Baltimore court the place to be

(BALTIMORE – August 2, 2026) – Baltimore basketball was on full display today as Gregory Branch and Talley Ho Productions presented the 20th Annual Legends Tournament at the Dome in East Baltimore.

There were games for the boys. There were games for the girls. And then there were the big boys—the Legends.

It was a great day for Baltimore basketball and an even better day for the community. The tournament brought out players, coaches, families, fans and familiar faces from across the city. Some came to compete. Some came to reconnect. Others came simply to stand inside one of Baltimore basketball’s most historic places and show their appreciation for the game.

For 20 years, Gregory Branch and Talley Ho Productions have used the Legends Tournament to bring generations together. That longevity matters. Events come and go, but it takes commitment, relationships, and a genuine love for the community to keep something alive for two decades.

Branch has done exactly that.

BMORENews publisher Doni Glover pictured with Baltimore basketball legend Roger Dickens during 20th Annual Legends Tournament at the Dome. Dickens attended Baltimore City College, where his circle included my friend Pat McKinley and Brian Matthews. The three later helped Towson State reach national Division II prominence in the 1970s. An All-American point guard, Dickens scored 1,057 points in only 2 seasons & was selected by the Washington Bullets in the 1978 NBA Draft. He later coached at the Community College of Baltimore—now Baltimore City Community College—for 25 years & was inducted into both the BCCC & Towson athletics halls of fame.

The younger players had an opportunity to compete in front of people who understand the game. The girls had their own opportunity to display their talent, toughness, and determination. Then the Legends took the court, reminding everybody that basketball skills may mature with age, but the competitive spirit never leaves.

The setting made the day even more meaningful.

The Dome—officially the Madison Square Recreation Center—occupies sacred ground in Baltimore basketball history. Generations of players have competed there, learned there, and earned their reputations there. The old saying in Baltimore is simple: If you never played at the Dome, you never really played basketball in Baltimore.

Coach William Wells, the man credited with building the Dome’s basketball tradition, was among those sharing its history. Wells has been connected to that ground since 1969. Long before many of Baltimore’s most celebrated players became household names, places like Madison Square gave young people somewhere to play, somewhere to learn and somebody to hold them accountable.

That is why the Legends Tournament is about more than who won or lost.

It is about preserving a culture.

It is about allowing a young player to look across the court and see someone who once stood exactly where he or she is standing. It is about former players returning to the community that helped shape them. It is about coaches, recreation leaders and mentors continuing to pour into another generation.

Baltimore basketball has always been built from the ground up. Before the television cameras, major college scholarships and professional contracts, there were neighborhood courts, recreation centers and adults who opened gym doors and refused to let young people give up on themselves.

Today, that legacy was alive at the Dome.

Gregory Branch and Talley Ho Productions deserve recognition for reaching the 20-year mark. In a city with so much basketball history, the Legends Tournament continues to provide a place where that history can breathe—where the past, present, and future of the game can meet on the same court.

Today was Baltimore basketball.

The boys played. The girls played. The Legends played.

And the people came out.

That is what made it a great day at the Dome.
