(BALTIMORE – July 14, 2024) – I’m not quite sure how I’m supposed to feel. Having seen – first-hand – a white man donning a whip in downtown Baltimore just minutes after hosting a broadcast on the assassination attempt of former President Donald John Trump, I have to admit I feel a certain kind of way. I mean, honestly, when have you ever seen such a spectacle? And, he was also wearing a dingy MAGA hat.
Yet, Republican sympathizers say that Trump is not a racist, that they feel for his pain, that violence is not the answer, laughably that God is on their side, and that Project 2025 is no more than right-wing rhetoric from the past repackaged for the next conservative president.
I tell you what: If someone had run up on this senior, taken his whip, and hit him with it, I do not think I would stop them. Yes, I am a child of God. No, I do not tolerate chicanery, threats, bullies, racists, and those who are as old as Jesus running around acting like a wild beast.
Do you want to talk about violence? Then, talk about the young white man who pulled a gun on Davon Dabbs in Taneytown during the July 4th weekend because he was riding with white girls in his car. Talk about Tulsa’s Greenwood District, which was bombed from the air and burned to the ground in 1921 because of a similar incident where a Black man was accused of harming a white female in an elevator. Talk about the thousands of lynchings, rapes, and brutality orchestrated by the Ku Klux Klan out of Pulaski, Tennessee, and other dents of iniquity in this otherwise beautiful land. Talk about the murder of Malcolm, Martin, and Medgar.
I have found that the cowards and draft dodgers who do much of the instigating wouldn’t “bust a grape in a fruit fight”. Instead, they leave others to fight their battles. I have found that the real heroes are people like John Brown who dared to stand up against pro-slavery individuals who dared to think they had the right to own another person. I have found that love is a word used so loosely – just like God when many people have no idea of the concept.
Besides, white man with the whip in downtown Baltimore, you do know that the attempted assassin of Trump wasn’t Black, Middle Eastern, or Latino – don’t cha? He was a 20-year-old white kid who was a registered Republican who disagreed with the antics of a hateful person in the form of Donald Trump.
This is a sorrowful day in America because, despite all of the attempts that political pundits are making to curb the spread of violence, it is too late, I fear. Trump has long ago tapped into the poor and uneducated ignorance seeping through the veins of people who have forgotten that the Civil War is over and the pro-slavery side lost. No statue, Confederate flag, or whip is going to change that. If you don’t like the direction this democracy is headed in, then abandon ship, go back to living under a rock, and leave civilized people alone. There is no room for troglodytes in America.
