(BALTIMORE – November 27, 2024) – Morgan State University, Maryland’s largest Historically Black College or University (HBCU), continues to break records in enrollment, student retention, and academic innovation. Among its many achievements, one metric stands out as a cornerstone of its success: the university’s graduation rate. Morgan’s graduation rate has surpassed 40% for six consecutive years, placing it firmly in the upper echelon of HBCUs, where the average graduation rate hovers between 35-40%. While this milestone is commendable, Morgan aims even higher, aiming to reach a 50% graduation rate by 2025.

This aspiration is not just about numbers—it represents a transformative journey for the university and its students, many of whom come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Nationally, the average graduation rate for all four-year institutions is 60-64%, underscoring the disparities that HBCUs face due to underfunding, resource limitations, and the unique challenges their student populations often bring to campus. Despite these hurdles, Morgan has consistently exceeded expectations, reflecting its students’ resilience and the institution’s commitment to fostering their success.

Key to this achievement is Morgan’s focus on retention and student support. For 14 consecutive years, the university has maintained a retention rate above 70%, a significant feat in higher education. Retention serves as the foundation for graduation, ensuring that students receive the resources, mentorship, and encouragement needed to persevere through the challenges of earning a degree.

Moreover, Morgan has invested in initiatives that address the specific needs of its diverse student body. From the development of modernized campus facilities to the introduction of over 30 new high-demand academic programs since 2020, the university is aligning its offerings with the evolving needs of the workforce and the aspirations of its students. Programs like “Morgan Completes You,” designed for nontraditional adult learners, exemplify the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation in education.

The steady rise in graduation rates also speaks to Morgan’s role as a leader among HBCUs in demonstrating the transformative power of higher education. By addressing financial barriers, expanding access to academic support services, and fostering a campus environment that values equity and excellence, Morgan is preparing its students for success and setting an example for other institutions to emulate.

Reaching a 50% graduation rate by 2025 is an ambitious but achievable goal for Morgan State University. It is a challenge that requires continued dedication from faculty, staff, alumni, and students alike. Yet, given Morgan’s proven track record of surpassing expectations—most recently by achieving its 10,000-student enrollment goal six years ahead of schedule—it is clear that the university thrives on ambition and perseverance.

As Morgan rises to meet this new milestone, it reinforces its position as a pillar of educational opportunity and a champion of student success. Its progress sends a powerful message: that with the proper support, resources, and determination, HBCUs can achieve excellence and continue to uplift the communities they serve.
