Who is Latesha?
Latesha Higgs, a Baltimore native and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is an author, mental health speaker/advocate, and podcaster who has been seen and heard on multiple platforms speaking and advocating for those living with a mental health condition as well as suicide prevention.
As a speaker and advocate, she shares her lived experiences of surviving her brother’s death by suicide as well as personally managing Bipolar 2 disorder. By employing scripture, therapy, and medication to live a life of recovery, she inspires others to do the same through teaching, mentoring, and coaching.
Latesha is also a facilitator, presenter, and trainer for several NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) programs. She currently teaches and resides in the Atlanta Metro area of Georgia where she serves on the Budget Advisory Council as well as the District Advisory Council of Clayton County Public Schools.
In addition to serving the students and families of Clayton County Public Schools, Latesha is the Executive Director of the DIVA Effect, Inc.—a nonprofit she found in 2016. In May of 2019, the DIVA Effect, Inc. became one of several Community Champions for Maryland’s 2019 Children’s Mental Health Matters Campaign and hosted a number of free activities and events during Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week.
Their youth development for girls, the DIVA Dolls, serves girls in grades 3-12. In 2019, under the leadership of psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Hale, the Special Advisor to the Office of the President at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Latesha was one of the founding members of the Congregational Depression Awareness Program in Baltimore, Maryland.
For her service to the community, Latesha has won multiple awards from various organizations including from the Gamma Omicron Omega Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. More of Latesha’s story can be found in Voyage Atl online magazine.
