By Hazel Edney

(WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 12, 2023) – This musical moment of honor during the 2023 Stateswomen for Justice Luncheon and Issues Forum still brings me to tears! Who would have thought that a jazzy version of our civil rights anthem, “We Shall Overcome”, would invoke such meaning in 2023?

Women’s History Month

But the women being honored during this year’s Women’s History Month were all in their 80s and some in their 90s; yet, “Still on the Battlefield!” They’re setting an example for us all.

A special thank you to AARP for your annual sponsorship. You are enhancing lives in so many ways!

Honorees in attendance were Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (keynote speaker) and Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds (journalist and author). Other honorees were Mary Frances Berry (U. S. Commission on Civil Rights); Congresswomen Maxine Waters, Frederica Wilson, and Eddie Bernice Johnson; Xernona Clayton (Trumpet Awards); Dr. Hazel Dukes (NAACP); Dr. Myrlie Evers-Williams (NAACP); Elaine Jones (NAACP Legal Defense Fund); Marian Wright Edelman (Children’s Defense Fund); and iconic Gospel singer Evangelist Shirley Ann Caesar-Williams.
