From Baltimore to the Middle East: My 2002 Journey Through Jordan During a Time of War

In 2002, long before social media and smartphones documented every moment, I had the opportunity of a lifetime — a 10-day familiarization tour of Jordan led by the late Arthur Murphy, brother of renowned civil rights attorney Billy Murphy Jr. Arthur had a vision: to expose Black journalists from across the United States to the beauty, history, and strategic importance of Jordan — a country he fell in love with during his college years. And what we experienced was nothing short of extraordinary. From the bustling streets of Amman to the coastal beauty of Aqaba… From the ancient wonders of Petra to the vast, cinematic landscapes of Wadi Rum… To the historic ruins of Jerash… We saw Jordan in full. We immersed ourselves in the culture — the people, the food, the olives, the hospitality — all while staying in world-class accommodations like the Mövenpick Resort Petra and other five-star properties that reflected the country’s commitment to tourism and excellence. But this wasn’t just a vacation. This journey happened during a tense moment in world history — as the United States was preparing to invade Iraq. We were in a region considered volatile, even dangerous. At times, we were in what could only be described as a “kidnap zone.” Armed security wasn’t optional — it was necessary. And yet, even in that environment, Jordan showed us something deeper: stability, grace, and a quiet strength. This video is a reflection of that journey — a rare moment in time, a cultural exchange, and a reminder of the power of travel, journalism, and global perspective.
