(WOODLAWN – June 1, 2026) – Some people make their mark through titles. Others make their mark through service.
Gordon Dean Wilder, affectionately known to his friends as “Pett,” has spent a lifetime serving his community, helping others, and proving that success means little if you do not reach back and lift someone else up.
A proud son of West Baltimore, Gordon’s story begins at Matthew A. Henson Elementary School, where he was a member of the school band and played the trombone. From there, he attended Lillie May Carroll Jackson Junior High School before becoming a Walbrook Warrior at Walbrook High School.
Like many hardworking Baltimoreans, Gordon built his life through dedication and perseverance. Following high school, he entered the construction industry with Cotton Construction Company and Local Union 516, where he worked for many years before retiring from a successful career.
But retirement did not mean slowing down.
Fueled by his love of automobiles and his gift for working with his hands, Gordon opened G&R Auto Works and Tire Shop on Liberty Heights Avenue. Through his business, he earned the trust of customers throughout the community by providing quality service and honest work.
Yet those who know Gordon best understand that his greatest passion has never been cars. It has always been people.
His commitment to helping those less fortunate inspired him to launch Operation Feed 100, an initiative dedicated to feeding the homeless and underserved residents of Baltimore. Whether serving meals downtown or supporting those facing difficult times, Gordon has consistently demonstrated a heart for service and compassion.
His faith also plays a central role in his life. Gordon faithfully serves as an usher and sings in the Men’s Choir at Morning Star Baptist Church, where he continues to uplift others through ministry and fellowship.
Known for his sharp sense of style and love of fashion, Gordon currently serves as a manager at K&G Fashion Superstore in Woodlawn, where he takes pride in helping customers look and feel their very best. For Gordon, service is not limited to the church or the community—it is reflected in how he treats people every day.
In 2020, Gordon was elected President of the Matthew A. Henson Alumni Association by his fellow alumni. Under his leadership, the organization sponsored a school-wide pizza party complete with drinks for every student, demonstrating his continued commitment to supporting the next generation.
Whether mentoring young people, feeding the hungry, serving his church, supporting his alma mater, or helping customers with a smile, Gordon Wilder has spent his life making a difference one person at a time.
His guiding principle comes from a quote he has long embraced:
“If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody with a word or a song, if I can show somebody that he’s traveling wrong, then my living will not be in vain.”
Looking at the life of Gordon Dean “Pett” Wilder, it is clear that his living has not been in vain.
