Since our inception as a Baltimore-based news outlet back in 2002, covering Black-owned businesses has been a staple of our broader agenda. We know that as Black-owned businesses grow in this 63% Black city, more Black people can become employed. We also know that our Black-owned businesses are essential to our growth and development as a community. Commerce is the backbone of all communities worldwide.

Truth be told, we garner over $1.5 trillion in annual disposable income. That places the Black community among the top 20 economies on earth. Can you imagine if we were better able to direct more of those Black dollars to Black-owned businesses? I can! And that’s the impetus behind the Joe Manns Black Wall Street Awards.

In short, we celebrate Black entrepreneurs and professionals as well as the people who support them regardless of race. To date, we’ve recognized over 2,500 individuals in New York City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Atlanta, New Orleans, Montgomery (AL), Las Vegas, and Tulsa.

Many thanks to Diane Bell-McKoy, Lee Vaughan, Rondy Griffin, Sanjay Thomas, Thomas Hardnett, the BMORENews.com advertisers, and the many others who have consistently supported our efforts.

Lastly, don’t give up! To all of the entrepreneurs out there who are struggling to find a way, do not give up! If God gave you the vision, He’ll also give you the provision. I started these awards for such people. Sure, we recognize some accomplished folks, but we are more focused on the people still trying to get there. Yes, it can be tough. Yes, there will be pitfalls. Yes, you might even take a few “L’s”. So what! “Keep going” were the words of Baltimore entrepreneur Reginald F. Lewis.

Don’t let anything, any person, or any situation prevent you from accomplishing your goals. Happy National Black Business Month!
