(NEW YORK – June 11, 2024) – In the ever-evolving landscape of the accounting profession, the resistance to change, particularly in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), has become increasingly indefensible.

Despite clear and compelling evidence that diverse teams drive better performance, innovation, and decision-making, many within the profession cling to outdated norms and practices. This sad and stubborn resistance is detrimental to the long-term relevance of our industry and the individuals who continue to feel marginalized and undervalued.

The time for mere discussions and half-hearted initiatives has long passed. It’s time for decisive action and an unwavering commitment to fostering a truly inclusive environment. We need leaders who are not afraid to challenge the status quo and who understand that embracing DEI is not just a moral imperative but a strategic necessity. I strive to be such a leader as the CEO of NYSSCPA—The New York State Society of CPAs, a Member of the AICPA National DEI Commission, and a proud CPA (for over half my life).

We must create pathways for underrepresented groups, provide mentorship and sponsorship opportunities, and ensure that our workplaces reflect the diversity of our world. Mind you,, that is NOT lowering the bar at all (I can assure you that I and many like me have jumped over much higher bars than one might expect). It is simply recognizing something we often say: ” What got us here won’t get us there.”

And, if you’re still determined to hang on to a past that has been left behind, I’ll respectfully wish you well in your other endeavors…

Because Enough Truly is Enough!
