Local Baltimore-Area Business, Ivy’s Tea Co. Awarded $10,000 Grant from Seagram’s Escapes!

Local Business Chosen from Nearly 2,000 Black-Owned Businesses Featured in Seagram’s Escapes National Online Holiday Marketplace

(BALTIMORE – January 14, 2021) – Seagram’s Escapes recently selected three Black-owned business out of nearly 2,000 participants in their national online holiday marketplace to each receive a $10,000 grant. Shanae Jones of Ivy’s Tea Co. in Laurel, Maryland was awarded $10,000 to help her achieve her dreams for her herbal tea business. The Seagram’s Escapes Holiday Marketplace ran from November 16 – December 31 and featured nearly 2,000 Black-owned businesses each offering unique gifts perfect for holiday shopping.

The Baltimore area-based winner, Ivy’s Tea Co., is a hip-hop inspired herbal tea company that offers herbal tea, herb infused honeys and “hip-hop inspired fine china.” Since the COVID-19 pandemic, their customers (60% first-time tea drinkers and more than 90% Black women) have turned to Ivy’s Tea Co. for information they can trust about ways to build immunity and support themselves physically, mentally and emotionally during quarantine. Jones and her team have also given back to the community by sponsoring The Black Woman Trademark Fund to help Black women entrepreneurs legally register the trademark for their businesses; launching a grant to send a marginalized person through an herbal apprenticeship program; and helped host a back-to-school afternoon tea with adolescent Black girls for the Greenmount West Community Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

“The grant allows me to get a food cart, meaning I will have another way to make money in the warmer months. It means Ivy’s Tea Co. can be more places this year, and it means I will be able to hire more members of my community,” said Shanae Jones, founder of Ivy’s Tea Co. “Every time I think about winning the grant, I smile so big and the more that I think about it, I think of new ways to grow my business and give to my community. I am just so thankful for the grant and look forward to showing Seagram’s Escapes what happens when you invest in small businesses.”

Seagram’s Escapes created and launched this program in an effort to relieve financial stress for Black-owned businesses during these unprecedented times. “This is a tough time to be a business owner and we know that Black-owned businesses specifically have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. We wanted to support these Black-owned businesses, especially during the crucial holiday selling season,” said Jennifer McCauley, Seagram’s Escapes brand director. “The Seagram’s Escapes Holiday Marketplace offered a unique way to amplify participants and increase their revenue. We are thrilled to have highlighted nearly 2,000 businesses through the program and to now offer $10,000 in grants each to three deserving business owners. We are so excited for Ivy’s Tea Co. to receive this grant and put it toward their incredible mission of supporting Black women physically, emotionally and mentally.”
