(BALTIMORE – October 21, 2020) – Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake held a ceremonial groundbreaking in the North Baltimore neighborhood of Woodbourne- McCabe last Friday. The project will be undertaken in cooperation with Harkins Builders, Inc.

“We can’t thank Harkins enough for their partnership and taking lead on this project. It’s impossible for Habitat for Humanity to build homes on our own. We rely on companies like Harkins for both their construction expertise and financial support. Harkins has been a generous supporter of our work in the Woodbourne-McCabe neighborhood and has helped lay the groundwork for dozens of homes aiding in the completion of 770 homes throughout Central Maryland,” says Mike Posko

Located at 504 McCabe Avenue in the Greater Govans area, the single-family home will include three- bedrooms, two-bathrooms, and is on track to be completed in the Spring of 2021.

“You can see our family and our littles ones and we want a place for them to grow. We appreciate Habitat and Harkins being a part of building that dream. We hope to have a place for them to grow for a long time. We can’t say thank you enough” said Salih, whose family is matched to the property.

The project launch represents Habitat Chesapeake’s commitment to the neighborhood which began in 2012 when the non-profit committed to renovate a projected 25 homes.

Since work began, residents have taken initiative to improve green spaces, build relationships with elected representatives and local organizations such as the York Road Partnership, and have derelict buildings demolished. The community was featured as one of Baltimore City’s “Neighborhoods on the Rise” by Live Baltimore, with home values increasing four-fold since 2015.

Habitat Chesapeake’s work in Woodbourne-McCabe will be one of three areas of emphasis in the coming years. Other areas of focus include up to 16 homes in the East Baltimore neighborhood of Milton-Montford, Belair-Edison, and 27 new homes in homes in Orchard Ridge, located in Northeast Baltimore.
