Today marks the start of National Teacher Appreciation Week where we recognize the pivotal role educators play in the lives of our children and in our community.
Remarkable teachers like the ones I had at Martin Luther King Elementary, Hardy Middle School, and Thurgood Marshall Academy played an enormous role in my journey. They helped me discover the power of my own voice and encouraged me to run enthusiastically toward my dreams. As a kid from Congress Heights, my teachers empowered me to see beyond the limits of my environment and equipped me with the tools to help change it.
As the Vice President of DC’s State Board of Education, I’ve remained committed to being a strong partner of DC’s teachers, working to achieve more equitable funding for our schools, wrap-around supports for our students, and the resources every educator needs to work, grow and thrive in the District.
Even as we’ve transitioned to distance learning, we are reminded of how our teachers have always gone the extra mile to ensure young people realize their full potential.
I’m proud to be in this fight for our teachers, and proud to count many of them as supporters of our campaign. This week, I’ll be thanking some of those educators who’ve made a difference in my life and in our community and outlining some ways I believe we can better support them in achieving the full promise of public education for every DC family.
I hope you’ll stand with us. If you can, please support our grassroots movement with a donation today.
