Who is she?
Dr. Washington Travels the Country as a Motivational Speaker, Trainer, Consultant; and Now, An Author!

Dr. Hattie N. Washington is a recently retired tenured Professor at Coppin State University (CSU) in Baltimore, MD after 20 years of dedicated and committed service.  8 of the 20 years, she made history as the first female Vice President of Coppin and raised over $8 million ($5 million over her given goal of $3 million). She is also the President & Founder of Aunt Hattie’s Place, Inc. (AHP), a home for foster boys with special educational needs, founded in 1997.  Dr. Washington reared males from ages 13 to 21 who had been abused, abandoned & neglected, and who are usually in special education and/or are several grade levels below their peers when they first come to AHP.

Dr. Washington is affectionately known as “Aunt Hattie” by her foster boys where their lives after AHP have proven to be productive and successful.  Even many of her Coppin’s students called her “Dr. Aunt Hattie” as many got involved and volunteered at AHP.  After 8 years as VP, Washington returned to the faculty as a Professor and concomitantly built a new eco-friendly third boys home in Montgomery County, MD—opened in 2010.

Washington has taught regular and special education students with learning, behavior and/or emotional problems for over 25 years in the USA and abroad.  Prior to CSU, Dr. Washington was Asst. Supt. of Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS); Prior to BCPS, She was a Program Specialist for the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) for eight years; and earlier, she taught at Bowie State University & Norfolk State University.  Her education includes a BS Degree in Elem. Education with a Minor in Special Education from Norfolk State Univ.; Master’s Degree from Ball State Univ. (an Athens, Greece Overseas Program) in Counseling Psychology; and a Ph.D. from the Univ. of MD, College Park in Curriculum & instruction. She has done further postgraduate study at Glasgow Univ. in Scotland, UK (on a Rotary International Fellowship); Harvard University in Boston, & Oxford University in London, England.

She has successfully reared two accomplished daughters (a physician & an attorney) and over 100 foster boys at AHP over the last 20 years.  She resides in Maryland and her hobbies include reading, writing, cooking, traveling, listening to smooth jazz & easy listening music, ballroom dancing/dancing, and spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters in Florida.

Dr. Washington is the author of the best-seller, “Driven To Succeed: An Inspirational Memoir of Lessons Learned Through Faith, Family and Favor” where she shares her humble beginnings in Prince Edward County, VA from living in the country to being sent away from home for education purposes, when her two-room schoolhouse closed down in 1959 for 5 years due to Virginia’s massive resistance to the Brown v. Board of Education Landmark Case, passed in 1954 mandating desegregation. Her compelling story will inspire audiences as she shares her road blocks, detours, lessons learned along the way, but, more importantly, how to see positive insights in all setbacks in our lives (the glass is half full outlook) and still succeed despite those challenges.
