(ANNAPOLIS – July 1, 2017) – Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. While President Trump’s insulting tweets and controversial efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare received a lot of attention, there is another much more sinister proposal that will affect poor people for decades to come.
The Baltimore Sun reported that Dr. Ben Carson, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), announced that he supported the Trump Administration efforts to sell public housing to private developers as a means of raising revenue for repairs.
This policy if approved, would removed the cap that President Obama put in place to insure that the number of public housing units that are sold are limited.
This policy, if changed could result in the displacement of thousands of poor people.
If you live in Annapolis, Maryland, what it means is that places like Newtowne 20, Eastport Terrace and Harbour House could be sold.
Many residents living in subsidized housing are totally oblivious to what is going on.
They need to be in touch with Legal Aid bureaus and tenant advocates to learn what the full effect of this change in policy will mean for them.
Elections have consequences. If you live in public housing, you had better be in touch with someone before its too late.
I can assure you that if this policy is allowed to go in effect, you will be witnessing a new old Urban Renewal Program, that led to the displacement and gentrification of an entire community.
Groups like RAB, NAACP and WISE need to become educated on what this reverse in Obama policies could mean to the poor.
The positions of candidates running in Annapolis for mayor and city council on this Trump policy need to be established now before you cast a vote for any candidate.
If you live in public housing, contact Legal Aid; find out what is going on. This policy could literally lead to you being on the streets with no place to go.
Don’t believe it? Remember the once touted HOPE 6 program? That program resulted in the displacement of thousands of people.
There are some things that people must do for themselves. If you live in Annapolis: Before you vote, you had better understand which candidates support the controversial Trump policies and which ones do not.
You have been duly notified; the rest is up to you. There are some things that people must do for themselves.
