(BALTIMORE – May 17, 2016) – The day after Mother’s Day was one no mother wants to face: Hearing the news that a child she raised has been killed. Well-loved former West Baltimore grocer Defivar Barrett, known affectionately as “Ms. Dee Dee”, received this excruciatingly painful news on Monday, May 9th.
Her grandson, Alfred Lee Barrett, III, was killed not far from the store. His body was found at 5:35 pm in the 1500 block of North Smallwood Street near Carver Vocational Technical High School.
Alfred was a young man I personally knew most of his life. And while he was no saint, he had a heart of gold. More than anything, he had a way of making you smile; I think that was his gift. He really had a heart for people, and that’s not hard to figure out – especially if you know Ms. Dee Dee. And if there was one person on planet earth whom Alfred loved more than anybody, it was Ms. Dee Dee.
Going back to the late 70s, Ms. Dee and her late husband, Alfred Barrett, ran a store called “Barrett’s Grocery” at the corner of Westwood and Ruxton avenues – a couple of blocks southwest of Coppin State. The community has always had much love for this family because they are simply great people. More than that, the Barrett’s brought with them the spirit of unconditional love. Over the years, they have helped countless people, including me.
To say the least, the family is torn to pieces right now and is hoping that someone will come forth with information regarding this senseless and untimely death of yet another young, black man in urban America. Please pray for them and all others who have lost a loved one to the violence in the streets. Lord knows when it will end.
Alfred will be funeralized on Wednesday, May 18th. Services will take place at Howell Funeral Home at 12 noon. It is located at 4600 Liberty Heights at Hillsdale.
Persons with information pertaining to the murder of Alfred Lee Barrett, III are asked to call 9-1-1.
