Op/Ed by Valerie Fraling: SUPPORT COLIN’S SEAFOOD & GRILL in Randallstown!

(RANDALLSTOWN – October 22, 2016) – Dear Friends of Colin’s Restaurant: October 15, 2016 marked the third anniversary of Colin’s Restaurant  which is owned and operated by Dante and Candes Daniels.  I am writing to you because they need your support to ensure the continued viability of this highly-successful establishment that many of us call “our home away from home.”

Kelly Carter, President of the Liberty Road Business Association and Robert Friend, owner of the Identity Lounge (located on the Liberty Road corridor) have requested a ‘beer, wine and liquor license’ to open an establishment two doors from Colin’s Restaurant and within a few feet of a packaged carry out liquor store.

As a resident in this community, I continue to be disappointed in the obvious lack of “family friendly” establishments along the Liberty Road Corridor.  It is woefully lacking compared to our close neighbors in both Pikesville and Owings Mills.  The Liberty Road Corridor has a plethora of bars, liquor stores, fried food and fast food establishments, but none that compare to the “family friendly environment” of Colin’s Restaurant.

Colin’s has become a positive influence in our community offering a family setting in a warm and friendly atmosphere. It is a place where “everybody knows your name,” a place for family dinners and celebrations, a place where the owners and staff welcome you openly and are vested in ensuring your visit is one of quality customer service given their on site presence.  Equally as important, I feel very safe when entering and leaving Colin’s during ALL hours of business operations.

While we clearly support economic development in the Liberty Road Corridor, it is imperative that it is the “right” type of development.  In no way should it challenge the viability of Colin’s, and no way should it invite a business that is not “family friendly.”

The reason I emphasize “family friendly” is because entrepreneurs have been granted liquor licenses and opened establishments that invited an unwanted element into our community that challenged our feelings of safety and security.  Several of these establishments had patrons who engaged in weekly altercations causing a heightened police presence, and a few had instances of firearm shootings.  These establishments were eventually closed.

With that said, we encourage economic growth in the Liberty Road corridor especially by African Americans but not next door to an establishment, that has given life to our community. We have worked hard to establish Colin’s as a place to be with people coming from DC, Virginia, Delaware and surrounding counties to dine in a family owned restaurant serving fine cuisine and a down-home feeling.

We are establishing a core group and asking that each of you who receive this letter bring 5 to 10 people to the hearing to show solidarity for Dante and Candes. We will meet at 1:45 p.m. to enter the hearing together as a group.

Please stand with Dante and Candes Daniels on Monday, October 24 at 2 p.m. for the liquor board hearing at Baltimore County Board of Liquor License in the Jefferson Building 105 W. Chesapeake Ave., Rm. 104, (410) 887-3191, to protest the issuance of a liquor license in the Randallstown Plaza Shopping Center.

Dante and Candes took a chance when they came to Baltimore County to answer our call for a sit down restaurant to meet the needs of Baltimore County residents who wanted a fine dining restaurant instead of another chicken joint. We CANNOT lose this establishment!!!
